Blob Blog

Once a client points to where they see themselves, it often opens the door to further exploration. We can gently unpack why they chose that particular figure, what it represents for them, and what might need to shift. This simple visual tool can help deepen our connection and understanding. They could also point to where they would like to be.

Sometimes, I invite clients to colour in the image, and take it home if they wish. This can help them reflect further between sessions and creates a sense of ownership.

I attended a 'blob' training session this week and I enjoyed it so much I wanted to share what I gained:

  • The Blob tree has just had its 40th birthday!!
  • The original was created in 1985 by Pip Wilson and Ian Long
  • The figures (“blobs”) are intentionally genderless, ageless, and culture-less. The idea is for them to feel universally relatable so that people can project or identify with them without being distracted by specific identity features.
  • Pip worked with young people who found it difficult to express or articulate their feelings and emotions, with his knowledge he set about creating an easy-to-use tool to improve their emotional intelligence. He shared his ideas with primary school teacher and artist Ian Long to bring the concept to life - the blog tree was formed!
  • Following on from the original 'blob tree' there are around 70 different themed trees which form the 'big book of Blob trees', each designed to explore different emotional and social situations
  • The creators have also produced a wide range of themed resources. These focus on specific areas such as school, emotions, religion, grief, change, health, sport and many more, allowing for targeted exploration and discussion across a variety of settings
  • The Blob Tree is widely used across the world in a variety of educational settings, supporting emotional expression and communication for learners of all ages - some schools use it as part of their morning register 🙂
  • Not just for children and young people - adults also find it a valuable way to explore and express emotions

The training session with Ian gave me greater confidence in using the Blob Tree within my practice. It provided practical strategies for introducing the tool effectively - even with individuals who may initially be reluctant to engage and helped me understand how to get the most out of it in a supportive and meaningful way.
